Can My Kittens Have Catnip
Among those cats who do like catnip you ll find two basic kinds of reactions.
Can my kittens have catnip. The reaction can be intense but it s relatively short lived and after it s over the cat cannot get high again for an hour or so. Nope catnip is not dangerous at least not in reasonable doses. And it s perfectly safe there s nothing in it that can harm your cat. However the short term symptoms are not pleasant.
It might make your kitty vomit if they eat a lot of it but in general cats know when to say when and will refuse it once they ve had enough. However there have been cases of cats who have essentially overdosed on catnip and have begun to feel ill. If by some chance your cat was to eat a large amount of catnip it could cause a mild tummy upset but that s not likely to happen. While most cats enjoy the herb dried or fresh they re usually less interested in catnip sprays which generally don t contain enough nepetalactone to appeal to most felines.
If a kitten is going to be a catnip lover you usually can tell that when he is 3 to 6 months old. Some cats become aggressive and overactive with catnip. Some cats become like a lazy drunk while others get a wired up crazy. Also catnip doesn t make all cats relax.
Catnip is a perennial herb of the mint family. It can be reversed simply by not taking the catnip. He may wind up falling in love with his catnip toys when he gets a little older but don t be discouraged if he never seems to care. Both smelling and ingesting catnip is safe for your feline family member.
Donasmrs november 21 2013. I only use catnip to help my cats relax when they re home alone when we have to travel or see the vet. Kittens are already very active so i don t think they need additional stimulation. Another is that catnip provides little benefit to your cat other than making it go crazy.
For cats that sniff catnip and rub against the plants they ll get more of the stimulating effects rotman said. If he s still young give it some time. Pull out your cat s favourite treat or snack with my cat an open can of tuna that s the same kind of excited reaction your cat is having to the catnip being pulled out. Again the reaction cats have to catnip being pulled out is one of excitement not addiction.
Newborn kittens aren t usually responsive to catnip at all until they are about 3 months of age. These hard wired preferences aren t immediately apparent though since kittens under the age of 3 months don t react to catnip at all.
